Building codes differ from city to city. Installing shingles over an existing roof can be done under certain conditions.

Most codes allow you to put one layer over an original layer, for a total of two layers.Doing this adds approximately 225 pounds per square (10' x 10' area) to your roof deck. It also compromises the life of the roof, because you have an old layer under a new one.

For one thing, you will not have the protection of materials in the membrane that must be installed under new codes, such as ice and water shield in areas where the temperature drops below freezing.

We here at Brigley recommend under re-roof applications that the old roof be completely removed, down to the deck, and a new roof be installed to new codes.

Ask your Brigley representative to explain this after a no-cost appraisal of your roof.
